The Department congratulates the first cohort of 66 talented graduates of the 'Design for Greater Efficiency' (DfGE) course, organized by IFC and trained by the department’s members of staff. The students recently received their well-deserved certificates on 28th May 2024 after dedicating two months to the intense training. The colorful graduation took place at the marvelous Executive Residency by Best Western in Riverside, Nairobi.
The training is one of the many fruits that the department is enjoying following the signing of the MOU between the University of Nairobi and the International Finance Corporation in June 2023. This significant achievement marks the culmination of their intensive journey into the realms of resource efficiency in buildings, emphasizing vital topics such as the impact of form and building skin on climate. Throughout the course, students delved into the intricacies of HVAC (heating, ventilation, and air conditioning) systems and controls, mastering the art of optimal energy utilization. Exploring the nuances of daylighting and lighting systems, they gained profound insights into creating sustainable and well-lit spaces.
Moreover, the curriculum also delved into crucial aspects of water conservation and sustainable material utilization, empowering graduates with the knowledge required to make conscientious choices in their future endeavors. The module on 'making a green business case' equipped them with the skills to advocate for and implement environmentally friendly practices in their respective professional settings.
One of the highlights of the program was undoubtedly the opportunity for students to visit a green-certified building in Nairobi (USIU- 3), providing them with real-world exposure to best practices in sustainable architecture and design. This immersive experience not only broadened their horizons but also inspired them to strive for excellence in their own academic and future professional projects.
The composition of the graduates was diverse; some pursued Construction Management, Real Estate, Quantity Surveying, and Architecture degrees. We are confident that the knowledge and skills they acquired during the course will not only boost their personal growth but also be a significant contribution to the global movement towards environmentally conscious practices in design and construction. The future is green.
