Overview

    Introduction

    The Doctor of Philosophy in Construction Management is intended to aid both aspiring and experienced professionals in the built environment and allied disciplines address current and emerging challenges in the construction industry.  The applicants will contribute to knowledge in their field of interest, impact on practice, policies and knowledge and become expert researchers in either academia or industry. The programme equips students with emerging general construction knowledge, the skills to undertake research in a wide range of methodologies and allowing students to develop into independent researchers.  This programme is suitable for Kenyan and International applicants with an excellent academic record who have a desire to undertake high-level academic research with leading academics.

    The PhD program is intended to respond to the above changes, challenges and dynamics in the construction sector.  It is therefore designed to prepare graduates for teaching and research, and for positions in public or private sector and business.

    Philosophy

    The philosophy of the programme is to develop dedicated high-level researchers that will enhance value for construction industry stakeholders by not only customizing the new and emerging concepts/implementations in construction management to suit our local needs but to additionally focus on finding innovative ways to address the unique management challenges of the highly technical construction industry.

    Rationale     

    Kenya faces perennial challenges in the construction industry such as building collapse, lack of accountability, haphazard management of the construction process, lack of dedicated researchers to customize emerging construction management concepts and lack of research into the unique management challenges of the highly technical industry. The programme aims at equipping construction professionals with high level construction management research skills and enhancing Master of Arts in Construction Management graduates with higher-level research skills tailored to meet the needs of the Kenyan, East African as well as the global construction sector. Specialization will be offered in the following areas:

    1. Construction management
    2. Construction law
    3. Construction Technology
    4. Construction procurement
    5. Construction economics
    6. Construction sustainability

    The research inquiries will be carried out under the supervision of multi-disciplinary supervisors who is a recognized specialist in the relevant field.

    Objectives

    The programme aims to equip candidates with high-level research skills that empower them to address challenges within the construction industry.  The objectives of the programme are: -

    1. To develop cadre of high-level construction sector researchers to evaluate construction industry challenges and formulate appropriate intervention strategies.
    2. To analyze construction management concepts applicability to local situations.
    3. To promote sustainable construction development through research.
    4. To prepare students for careers in institutions of higher learning, research institutions and in the private sector.

    Schedule of Intakes

    The Department admits new students at the beginning of every academic calendar year (which is usually September)

    Mode of Delivery

    • Face-to-Face Mode

    This is through lectures and tutorials using notes, electronic presentations, instruction manuals, group discussions, practical laboratory demonstrations and fieldwork.

    • Open, Distance Learning and e-Learning

    In case of delivery through ODeL, special arrangements shall be made for the practical laboratory, field work and computing sessions. Where not feasible alternative arrangements will be made to do them on campus. 

    • Blended Learning

    This is a hybrid of face to face with Open, Distance Learning and e-learning.

    A candidate registered for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy shall normally carry out a programme of original study or research over a minimum period of six semesters (15 weeks) after approval of the research proposal and appointment of supervisors by the department and after full registration.

    Minimum Admission Requirements

    The following shall be eligible to apply for registration on for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the University:

    Either

    a holder of a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree from the University of Nairobi in Building Economics, Quantity Surveying, Construction Management, Architecture, Engineering;

    Or

    a holder of a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree or equivalent academic qualifications of another institution recognized by the University of Nairobi Senate as of comparable status in Building Economics, Quantity Surveying, Construction Management, Architecture, Engineering;

    In either case, the applicant must be able to produce evidence, to the satisfaction of Senate, of his adequate background in the discipline and capacity to carry out original research.

    In addition on to producing evidence of eligibility for registration, candidates for the Doctor of Philosophy degree may be required to appear for interview by the School to determine their suitability for registration.

    Attachment Opportunities

    • Bearing in mind that the programme is intended for construction industry professionals in practice and in academia who have already obtained a Master’s degree, industrial attachment is not a prerequsite for the partial fulfilment of the requirements of the degree and shall not be provided.

    Career Prospects

    • PhD candidates pursue doctorates out interest/passion for a particular subject area or the need to become experts in certain specializations due to the in-depth knowledge gained in the particular area. The PhD in Construction Management satisfies this need.
    • With opportunities provided by infrastructure development pillar in Kenya Vision 2030, the Big 4 agenda, the rapidly expanding private sector construction and the Sustainable Development Goals, a Doctor of Philosophy graduate in Construction Management can become engaged as a researcher, technical advisor, construction management consultant, construction project auditor, construction project finance advisor, in academia, in foreign and local contracting firms, in multinationals and development partners engaged in the construction industry.  These opportunities are available in Kenya, East Africa, Africa and globally.
