Overview

Brief Background

In the 21st century in Kenya and all over the world construction is moving towards being driven by business needs/goals rather than by design as in the past.  In addition, there is greater realization of the crucial role of construction in laying and/or maintaining the foundations of economic development be they in the building or engineering fields.  Concurrently, stakeholders are acutely aware that in a rapidly changing business environment where construction projects increase in complexity of scope, design, materials, and technology, the basic construction professions require additional skills.  These realities have heralded the growth of construction management as the industry seeks to address these challenges in new and innovative ways.

The adoption of construction management in developing countries like Kenya, while accepted as a move in the right direction, has its own challenges.  The concepts and their implementation are based on mature and more technologically different construction industries in the western world.  This in turn creates the need to not only customize the concepts/implementations to suit our local needs but to additionally focus on finding innovative ways to address our unique challenges.  This calls for dedicated high-level research that will enhance value for stakeholders.

The Doctor of Philosophy in Construction Management is intended to aid both aspiring and experienced professionals in the built environment and allied disciplines address current and emerging challenges in the construction industry.  The applicants will contribute to knowledge in their field of interest, impact on practice, policies and knowledge and become expert researchers in either academia or industry. The programme equips students with emerging general construction knowledge, the skills to undertake research in a wide range of methodologies and allowing students to develop into independent researchers.  This programme is suitable for Kenyan and International applicants with an excellent academic record who have a desire to undertake high-level academic research with leading academics.

The PhD program is intended to respond to the above changes, challenges and dynamics in the construction sector.  It is therefore designed to prepare graduates for teaching and research, and for positions in public or private sector and business.
